  32. The Amiga can read and write MS-DOS and Atari ST format disks.
  33. Commodore provides a PC-Utils program that can read/write IBM format,
  34. but only to 5 1/4" disks.  There is a free program called PCPatch
  35. which patches the Commodore software to handle 3 1/2" disks.  It comes
  36. with a configuration file to read/write/format Atari ST disks, as
  37. well.  It has appeared on Usenet in the past, and is available from
  38. the standard places with Amiga FTP archives, as well as the Fish disk
  39. collection.  If you really need help, email or post and I'll try to
  40. email you the software (ack! I've revealed myself as a closet Amiga
  41. owner!)

  43. I do not believe it is possible to read/write Amiga disks with the
  44. standard Atari ST drive, or at least I haven't heard of anybody who's
  45. written a hack to do so.  The Amiga uses a bizarre disk format in
  46. which it reads/writes entire tracks of data at a time, with no sector
  47. gaps.  Most disk controllers choke on this format.

  112.         About 50 disk, most of which are STart and Compute magazine disks

  160. I have a rather strange problem, I have written a GEM application
  161. which uses AES and LINE-A calls, and suffice it to say, it runs
  162. perfectly fine but has trouble exiting to the desktop
  163. properly and displays 3 bombs.
  164.  
  165. The really wierd thing is the application runs and exits fine when
  166. launched from a shell other than the desktop, but then causes the
  167. SHELL to crash when you try exiting it to the desktop with 3 or 4
  168. bombs. Other programs can be launched from the shell before exiting it
  169. without error, the shell only crashes upon attempting to exit to the desktop.

  171. I did use rsrc_free() and appl_exit() to cleanup before exiting, and I
  172. do not use any windows, only a menu bar and dialog boxes. Any ideas ?

  184. I got so many queries regarding this information, that I thought
  185. I general posting would be of value.

  187. The system in question is available from Berkley MicroSystems, in
  188. Berkley, California.  It uses a standard size Un*x style cartridge
  189. tape mechanism and tapes (unlike the ICD unit, which
  190. uses a non-standard size) to allow you to backup/restore your
  191. hard-disc partitions on a file-system basis
  192. (there is no image backup yet).  Tape cartridge prices run about
  193. $15 each (less if you go to swap meets, where used Sun Microsystems tapes
  194. can be found for as little as $5).  Disc to tape speed averages
  195. about a meg a minute, which means that the average 10 meg partition
  196. can be backed up (assuming it's completely full) in roughly 10 minutes.
  197. One nice thing is that the backup doesn't need to be monitored,
  198. so you can be off doing something else while your hard disc gets backed up.
  199. (Like sleeping...:-)

  201. Berkley MicroSystems will sell you a complete system (tape drive, controller,
  202. SCSI<->ASCI board, software) for $650.  However, they say that since the
  203. cost of the tape drives mechanisms is so cheap, you can probably do a
  204. lot better by going out and buying a used tape drive yourself, and
  205. just buying from them the controller card (which is apparently
  206. the difficult item to get ahold of [I think their price is $100])
  207. and their SCSI<->ASCI board [?$150] (if you need it).
  208.  
  209. One caveat--you will need some technical expertise in order to put
  210. this system together.  While SCSI stuff is pretty much plug and play
  211. these days, there is still a certain level of knowledge needed in order
  212. to prevent yourself from frying expensive components.  (This is not
  213. a 'take it out of the box and run it' type system, you will have
  214. to get your hands dirty and assemble it.)  Given that
  215. caution, if you're in the market for an inexpensive tape backup,
  216. Berkley MicroSystems is definitely worth a look.  You can reach

  294. hard it would be on hooking up a VGA monitor to my ST so I can get all
  295. three resolutions with on monitor. I've seen this one Magnavox monitor
  296. that can run at 70 khz and can support the resolution of a ST, but would
  297. it just require a special cable, or would some hardware be involved?
